PVSC FAQs

Pictometry

Q: What is Pictometry?

A: Pictometry is a process of taking oblique (angle) aerial photographs from the four different compass directions. This patented process allows measurements to be done directly from the oblique photographs. This allows access to view each side of a property and take measurements from any point of reference.

A pilot project is underway to determine the usefulness of Pictometry imagery to other public organizations such as municipal governments, police forces, fire departments and emergency services. Currently PVSC has Pictometry imagery for some urban areas in Halifax Regional Municipality and Cape Breton Regional Municipality. There is anticipation that through a partnership of several public organizations there will be an opportunity to further expand the coverage of the Pictometry imagery and to obtain updated imagery in the future.

Q: How is Pictometry beneficial to PVSC?

A: Pictometry allows PVSC to view properties that have not been visited recently, will highlight any changes made to properties and is extremely helpful in providing a more accurate assessment.

Pictometry allows PVSC to have detailed comparative data from the time the photograph was taken to the present time. This way, PVSC knows when new measurements are necessary and Pictometry allows those measurements to be made at the touch of the mouse.
