Taxation & Assessment

Q. My municipal tax bill went up. Did it go up because of an increase in my property assessment?

A. PVSC's assessors determine your property's market value and your municipality uses that assessed value to calculate your municipal tax bill. For more information about your property tax bill, please contact your municipal office.

Q. How is property assessment related to property taxes?

A. Municipal governments use property assessments to determine tax rates and to calculate tax bills. Property taxes help to pay for services such as garbage pick-up, sewers, new roads and repairs, police and fire services, etc. Municipalities can set different tax rates for residential properties and businesses.

Q. Can I get a reduced property tax rate?

A. Questions on tax rates or deferral programs should be answered by your municipal office. Information on Service Nova Scotia's Seniors Property Tax Rebate Program can be obtained online or by calling 1-877-296-9338 or in Metro at 424-4500.

Q. Will my property assessment increase every year?

A. Property values are assessed every year. The change in your assessed value will depend on the real estate market.
